PREGNANCY PILATES BENEFITS

How is Pilates during pregnancy beneficial?

Pilates during pregnancy is low-impact

Pilates is a safe and effective form of exercise for pregnancy. It involves careful controlled movement usually seated or lying; there’s no jumping around and putting extra force on your joints or bladder!

Supports your posture

Pregnancy causes many changes in our bodies, including a softening of our joints to be ready for birth. Pilates works on all the muscles that help support your spine and pelvis as your baby grows to help maintain balance and prevent deviations in your posture.

Helps reduce aches and pains

Aches and pains are pretty standard for most pregnancies as your shape evolves, particularly in the lower back, upper back and hips. Pilates will help you move and stretch out tight muscles and relieve those tiring aches and pains.

Focus on your breath

Pilates is a mindful movement practice, and the breath is something we pay attention to and notice how it can aid our muscles in moving. During labour awareness of your breath is really important and mastering control of your breath will help you stay calm, relax, and contribute to a positive birth experience.

Strengthen your pelvic floor

Core strength is a fundamental focus of Pilates and this includes the pelvic floor. Many of us won’t be aware of the health of our pelvic floor until the weight of our growing baby is bearing down on it, but you can start to strengthen your pelvic floor at any time; it’s never too late! A strong yet supple pelvic floor is likely to heal quicker post-birth too.

Feel confident

Practising Pilates will help you focus on you, preparing yourself for what’s coming. Feeling good in body and mind, feeling informed, and feeling supported in our group of expectant mothers will empower you to feel confident as you enter into motherhood.
